In 2019, Suffolk County Council became the birthplace of our pioneering Vegan Network, co-founded by Sadie Jade and Jack Barber. Motivated by a lack of representation and awareness of vegan perspectives within local government, Sadie and Jack set out to create a space where vegan staff could feel supported, heard, and empowered.
Evolution of a network
What began as a grassroots effort quickly evolved into a transformative force within the council. The Vegan Network was designed not only to support those who identify as vegan but also to engage with staff who share values around animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and health—regardless of their dietary choices.
Today a third of the network’s members identify as vegan, with the remaining two-thirds drawn by shared ethical and environmental concerns. It is a vibrant and inclusive space.
Over the past five years, the network has grown to become the third largest staff network within Suffolk County Council, now run collaboratively by six network co-chairs. It has hosted impactful events such as a citizen’s assembly on the climate crisis, and even partnered with a local farmer to restore hedgerows—planting over 1,000 native trees including Hawthorn, Dogwood, and Field Maple.
Coaching other councils
Sadie and Jack’s work hasn’t stopped at Suffolk. They’ve actively mentored other local government organisations across the UK, helping them replicate the success of the Vegan Network. Their coaching includes guidance on:
- Building inclusive staff networks
- Promoting veganism as a protected philosophical belief under the Equality Act 2010
- Hosting awareness events and campaigns
- Influencing policy and decision-making within councils for members
Their efforts have contributed to a growing movement within the public sector, and they continue to partner with other government networks such as the Civil Service Vegan Network.
